National warning issued: Earthquake in the Drake Passage; no impact on China's coast

China Earthquake Networks Center officially determined: At 20:58 on May 2, an earthquake occurred in the Drake Passage (56.80°S, 68.25°W) Magnitude 7.4 earthquake, Focal depth 10 kilometers.

Chile's National Disaster Prevention and Response Service issued a tsunami warning requiring coastal residents in the Magallanes Region to evacuate immediately and cooperate with the evacuation work of the on-site technical department.

The Drake Passage earthquake may trigger a local tsunami

but will not affect China's coast

According to @National Warning Release: At 20:58 on May 2, 2025 (Beijing time), A magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred in the Drake Passage (56.75°S, 67.88°W), with a focal depth of 48 kilometers.

Based on preliminary earthquake parameters, the Ministry of Natural Resources' Tsunami Warning Center judged that the earthquake may trigger a local tsunami around the epicenter, but will not affect China's coast.
